What is a Healthcare Assistant?

Healthcare Support Workers or Healthcare Assistants (HCA) provide assistance, support, and direct personal care to service users in a variety of healthcare services. They generally work in support of health professionals or associate professionals.

 

Becoming a Healthcare Assistant in Ireland

Candidates need to be studying towards a nursing career or have an appropriate FETAC Level 5 or QQI qualification. Candidates overseas must meet the equivalent qualification required in Ireland. External training is essential but not desirable.

 

Do I Need to Have Experience?

To be employed as a HCA, it would be preferable for candidates to have some experience within the industry prior to employment.

 

What Skills Do I Need to be a Healthcare Support Worker?

Someone that is good-natured and caring is key. The suitable candidate would need to be willing to do personal tasks and be able to follow instructions and procedures. The candidate would need to remain calm and willing to be hands-on with service users that may have challenging behaviour.

 

Is there a Career Progression to Further my Skills?

The great thing about becoming a healthcare assistant is that the candidate can work his or her way up to a level where he or she can then apply for a senior role once they have gained enough experience and skills. This would be up to the discretion of the organisation should there be a suitable position available.

 

I’m Interested! Where can I sign up to study?

  • Education and Training Boards (ETB’s) run classrooms on a full time basis for one year
  • Courses can be done through reputable websites – just ensure that it is QQI certified
