About a Social Care Career

Social care workers in Ireland support vulnerable individuals and groups, such as children in care, people with disabilities, homeless individuals, and those struggling with addiction. The work involves advocacy, life-skills training, emotional support, and liaising with other professionals.

Social Care Staff generally work in key areas including: Disability, Intellectual Disability, Homelessness and Child Services, among many others.

Kickstarting a Social Care Career in Ireland

Before embarking on a Social Care career, there are certain requirements that you will need to have.

CORU Registration

CORU is the regulatory body for health and social care workers in Ireland, established to ensure the utmost protection for patients and high standards across conduct, education, and training across the industry.

For more on attaining a CORU registration, take a look at our help article here.

Educational Requirements

Typically, for a Social Care career in Ireland, you must have a minimum of QQI Level 7 in a Social Care/Healthcare Subject (on the National Framework of Qualifications, NFQ).

Some of these healthcare subjects can include Psychology, Nursing, Social Sciences, Early Childhood Learning, Disability and Addiction/Homeless Studies.

Experience Required

Most social care services look for post-qualification experience; however, work placements completed during college are often recognised and can count toward this requirement during the application process.

That’s where partnering with our recruitment agency can help, supporting candidates in gaining the relevant experience both during and after qualification.

Even if you don’t yet have post-qualification experience, you can still apply for social care roles, as many of our clients provide comprehensive induction and training to help you succeed in their services.

Certifications & Skills

In addition to your Social Care or equivalent qualification, employees are required to have additional certification in MAPA/TCI, Patient Moving and Handling, First Aid, Basic CPR, Infection Control and Children’s First.

If you do not currently possess these skills and are looking to undertake a CPD Training course, we have a variety on offer at AA Euro Healthcare, take a look here.

Further information on these courses can be provided by a Recruitment Representative at AA Euro Healthcare.
